Architecture building blocks

November 28 & December 5, 12, 19, 2020

Architecture as a profession is seen as a profession full of glamour, accessorized with awards and bathed in glory. However, for most, the reality of designing splendid spaces and settling down is often a reality riddled with struggles, strewn with obstacles, beset with conflict, and afflicted with conundrums of ethics, responsibility, and values.

‘Building Blocks’ by IDF hopes to raise the dust to question what builds the blocks of architecture – and to do so, engage practicing professionals in conversation to address the common conditions that frame the architectural profession. The four sessions, scheduled every Saturday from November 28, will feature industry stalwarts Brinda Somaya, Sanjay Puri, Ambrish Arora, Abha Narain Lambah, Soumitro Ghosh, Ayaz Basrai, Akshat Bhatt, Smita Gupta, Asim Waqif, Riyaz Tayyibji, Niels Schoenfelder and Vicky Richardson. These discussions will address fundamental concerns that are often overlooked or ignored, but are essential cogs in the architectural machinery – What is “good” architecture? Which is more valuable – architectural education or vocational training? What is the profession of architecture? How to build responsibly?

This forum aims to look beyond showcasing finished projects or hosting a showcase of portfolios – and instead provide an opportunity to have frank discussions and express personal curiosities and requests.
