The University of Munich in Germany has a new building for research and education in the field of sustainable chemistry. This upgrade will expand the Straubing Science Center and hopefully develop many brilliant new ideas and innovations that will pave the way for a better future.

Designed in an elongated three-story style, the entire Nachhaltige Chemie building is elevated and rests on stilts three meters above the ground, or about 10 feet. This is a solution for the location of the building, as it is in the flood zone of the nearby Donau River and is almost as tall as the flood wall itself.

A raised platform leads to the entrance, which takes attendees into a central hall. Meanwhile, galleries and open staircases welcome the gaze here. Starting from the central hall, there is an east wing, a west wing and also an auditorium facing the riverbank.
Educational spaces are on the first floor, while upper floors are used for laboratories, offices and technical engineering areas. Additionally, the cafeteria is in the west wing, which leads to an outdoor seating area. The west wing is full of lecture halls and seminar spaces.
Also, the offices, lounges and conference rooms on the upper floors are grouped around a courtyard in the west wing.
The facade of the building was created with wood, glass and concrete. Most of them came from sustainable sources. Additionally, the roof has photovoltaic elements, meaning it has solar panels to harness the power of the sun.
The new building on the University of Munich campus is meant to educate minds and create innovations for the future. It’s an example of sustainable construction and self-contained construction — the kind of design that will lead the way into the future. In other words, this college campus building is a big deal.
